Who We Are
General Credit Union is a member owned, financial institution providing cost-effective, personal services through sound growth and innovative ideas. We hold to the belief that honesty, integrity, and a sincere heart can make a positive influence in the lives of our members.
General Credit Union was chartered on April 25, 1960, by the National Credit Union Administration. Founded by General Telephone employees, the credit union has reached over $81 million in assets as of July 31, 2012.
In addition to employees of GTE (Verizon, Frontier), the credit union opened its membership to other employee groups. Lincoln Financial Group, Comcast, Swiss Re, Brotherhood Mutual Life Insurance, The Fort Wayne Komets, and Physicians Health Plan employees are a few of the companies eligible for membership. The charter also allows for family membership and carries a “once a member, always a member” philosophy. The most recent change to the charter states that anyone that LIVES OR WORKS in counties of Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, Noble, Steuben, Wells or Whitley in Indiana my join General Credit Union. More so, a parent, spouse, child, step-child, brother, sister, neice, nephew, grandparent, grandchild, father-in-law, mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, uncle or cousin of a current GCU member is also invited to bank with us.
The Board of Directors is the policy setting arm of the credit union. Elections are held each year for positions on this Board. Each credit union member has one vote in credit union elections.
The credit union adheres to the premise that it is in the business of helping people. Through sound financial management and support for the wide variety of financial services offered, the credit union strives to be the primary financial institution for its members.
